Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

He also said—may Allah have mercy on him:

Section on “Love of Beauty” (*)

It is established in Sahīh Muslim, on the authority of ‘Abd Allāh ibn Mas‘ūd, that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“No one with an atom’s weight of faith in his heart will enter the Fire, and no one with a mustard seed’s weight of arrogance in his heart will enter Paradise.”

In another version: “No one with an atom’s weight of arrogance in his heart will enter Paradise.” A man said, “O Messenger of Allah, a man likes his clothes and shoes to be fine.” He replied, “Allah is Beautiful and loves beauty. Arrogance is rejecting the truth and looking down on people.”

His words, “Allah is Beautiful and loves beauty,” include the fine clothing about which he was asked. Thus, it is understood that Allah loves what is beautiful in people, and, by implication, the statement’s general meaning encompasses what is beautiful in everything.

This is like his statement in the hadith narrated by al-Tirmidhī:

“Allah is Clean and loves cleanliness.”

It is also authentically reported from him in the Sahīh:

“Allah is Pure and accepts only what is pure.”

Shaykh Nāsir ibn Hamad al-Fahd writes (p. 177): There are two points here: First: this chapter is excerpted from al-Istiqāma (Uprightness), 1:422–435. Second: errors—whether omissions or textual corruptions—are numerous in both al-Fatāwā (Fatwas) and al-Istiqāma. Some can be corrected by comparing the two texts, while others can be corrected from the context. I have therefore endeavoured to correct this chapter—with Allah’s help—as follows: The shaykh—may Allah grant him success—then reproduced the entire chapter. Consult it there, pp. 177–188.
