He—may Allah have mercy on him—was asked:
Regarding a woman experiencing postnatal bleeding: may she recite the Quran during this bleeding? Is intercourse with her permissible before forty days have elapsed? If forty days have elapsed but she has not performed the ritual bath, is intercourse with her permissible without her bathing?
He answered:
Praise be to Allah. Intercourse with her before the bleeding stops is forbidden by agreement of the imams. If the bleeding stops before forty days have elapsed, she must perform the ritual bath and pray. Her husband, however, should refrain from intercourse with her until the forty days are complete.
As for reciting the Quran, if she does not fear forgetting it, she should not recite it. If she fears forgetting it, she may recite it according to one of the two scholarly views. Once the bleeding has stopped and she has performed the ritual bath, she may recite the Quran and pray, by scholarly agreement. If she is unable to bathe because water is unavailable, or because she fears harm due to illness or the like, she should perform dry ablution. She may then do whatever the ritual bath would permit her to do. Allah knows best.
