Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

to have intercourse with her until she bathes. As Allah Most High says:

“And do not approach them until they are pure. Then, when they have purified themselves, go in to them from where Allah has commanded you.”

As for Abū Hanīfah, he permits intercourse with her if her bleeding ceases at the maximum duration of menstruation, or if a prayer time has elapsed for her and she then bathes. The majority’s view is supported by the apparent meaning of the Quran and the transmitted reports.”

He was asked about the two hadiths recorded in both Sahīh collections:

The first is narrated from 'Ā'ishah—may Allah be pleased with her:

“Fātimah bint Abī Hubaysh asked the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—saying, ‘I suffer from persistent bleeding and never become pure. Should I stop praying?’ He replied, ‘That is bleeding from a vein. Rather, refrain from prayer for as many days as you used to menstruate, then bathe and pray.’”

Another version states:

“‘It is not menstruation. When your period begins, refrain from prayer; then, when its usual duration has passed, wash the blood off yourself and pray.’”

The second hadith is also narrated from 'Ā'ishah—may Allah be pleased with her:

“Umm Habībah suffered from non-menstrual bleeding for seven years. She asked the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—about this, and he instructed her to bathe for every prayer.”

Did she perform the full prescribed ritual bath, or did she wash away the blood and perform ablution? Furthermore,
