He was asked:
Is the dog pure or impure? What are the scholars’ views concerning it?
He replied:
The scholars hold three well-known views concerning the dog:
The first is that it is entirely impure, even its hair. This is the view of al-Shāfiʿī and one of the two opinions reported from Ahmad.
The second is that it is pure, even its saliva. This is the well-known view reported from Mālik.
The third is that its saliva is impure, but its hair is pure. This is the well-known position of Abū Hanīfah. This reported position is supported by most of his followers, and it is also the other opinion reported from Ahmad. This is the strongest of the three views.
Thus, if moisture from its hair comes into contact with clothing or the body, it does not render either impure. If it laps from water, the water is to be poured away. If it laps from milk or something similar, some scholars, such as Mālik and others, hold that the food may be consumed. Others hold that it is to be poured away; this is the position of Abū Hanīfah, al-Shāfiʿī, and Ahmad. If, however, the milk is present in a large quantity, the correct view is that it does not become impure.
Three opinions are reported from Ahmad concerning hair growing on an impure part of the body:
The first is that all such hair is pure, even the hair of dogs and pigs. This is the view preferred by Abū Bakr ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz.
The second is that all such hair is impure, as al-Shāfiʿī holds.
