genus, or you may mean a particular member of that genus.

As for the universal genus, it exists in hearts and minds as knowledge, recognition, and conception. As for a particular member of the genus, such as Zayd or ʿAmr, it exists wherever that individual is located. This is what is called existence in concrete reality, outside the mind. It may also be conceived in the mind in this way, as a distinct particular.

As for the unqualified genus—such as the human being considered apart from universality and particularity, which is called the reality itself or the genus without qualification—just as it is unrestricted in itself, it is unrestricted as to its locus. However, it is apprehended only by the mind, which is therefore regarded as its locus in this respect. It is sometimes also regarded as existing in concrete individuals, on the grounds that every human being has a share in humanity without qualification. What exists in a particular individual of the species is that individual’s share and portion.

Once this is clear, his statement, “For he did not keep himself free of urine,” refers to the urine already understood in this context: the urine that would soil him, namely, his own urine.

This is further supported by seven considerations.

The first is the wording reported:

“For he did not ensure that he was clear of urine.”

Ensuring such clearance can only concern one’s own urine, for it means ascertaining that the penis is clear, just as one ascertains that the womb is free of a child.
