by washing the fat? There are two positions on this within the schools of al-Shāfiʿī and Ahmad, and likewise within Mālik’s school. Those who hold that fats can be purified by washing hold that this can be purified by washing; those who do not, hold that it cannot. Allah knows best.
He was asked:
If a dog laps milk or something else, what must be done?
He replied:
Scholars have differed concerning the dog, holding three positions:
The first is that it is pure, even its saliva. This is Mālik’s position.
The second is that it is impure, even its hair. This is al-Shāfiʿī’s position and one of the two positions reported from Ahmad.
The third is that its hair is pure but its saliva is impure. This is Abū Hanīfah’s position and one of the two positions reported from Ahmad. This is the soundest of the positions. Thus, if moisture from its hair comes into contact with clothing or the body, it does not render them impure. If it laps water, the water is to be poured away.
