they both said: ‘Abd al-Razzāq narrated to us, saying: Ma‘mar informed us, from al-Zuhrī, from Sa‘īd ibn al-Musayyib, from Abū Hurayrah, who said:

‘The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “If a mouse falls into clarified butter, then if it is solid, discard the mouse and what surrounds it; but if it is liquid, do not go near it.”’

Al-Hasan said: ‘Abd al-Razzāq said: ‘Ma‘mar would sometimes transmit it from al-Zuhrī, from ‘Ubayd Allāh ibn ‘Abd Allāh, from Ibn ‘Abbās, from Maymūnah, from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.’

Abū Dāwūd said: Ahmad ibn Sālih said: ‘Abd al-Razzāq said: ‘Abd al-Rahmān ibn Mardawayh informed us, from Ma‘mar, from al-Zuhrī, from ‘Ubayd Allāh ibn ‘Abd Allāh, from Ibn ‘Abbās, from Maymūnah, from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, with a report like the hadith transmitted by al-Zuhrī from Sa‘īd ibn al-Musayyib.”

Abū ‘Īsā al-Tirmidhī said in his Jāmi‘:

“Chapter on Reports Concerning a Mouse Dying in Clarified Butter.”

Sa‘īd ibn ‘Abd al-Rahmān and Abū ‘Ammār narrated to us, saying: Sufyān narrated to us, from al-Zuhrī, from ‘Ubayd Allāh ibn ‘Abd Allāh, from Ibn ‘Abbās, from Maymūnah:

“A mouse fell into some clarified butter and died. The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was asked about it, and he said: ‘Discard it and what surrounds it, and eat the butter.’”

Abū ‘Īsā said: This hadith is good and authentic. This hadith has also been transmitted from ‘Ubayd Allāh ibn ‘Abd Allāh, from Ibn ‘Abbās, stating that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was asked about it, without mentioning Maymūnah in the chain. The hadith transmitted by Ibn ‘Abbās from Maymūnah is more authentic.
