—may Allah bless him and grant him peace: ‘I am sending down to you a Book that water cannot wash away; you will recite it asleep and awake.’” Thus, recitation is permissible while standing, sitting, walking, lying down, or riding.
He was asked:
A man suffering from inflammation of the eyes enters a state of major ritual impurity. He cannot wash himself with either warm or cold water, but he can perform ablution. What should he do?
He answered:
Praise be to Allah. If he has inflammation of the eyes, he should wash whatever parts of his body he can. As for the parts that would be harmed by water—such as the eye and the surrounding area—the scholars hold two views:
The first is that he must perform dry ablution. This is the position of al-Shāfiʿī and Ahmad.
The second is that he is not required to perform dry ablution. This is the position of Abū Hanīfa and Mālik. They all agree, however, that washing the greater part of the body, where washing is possible, is obligatory. Allah knows best.
He was asked:
A man has intercourse with his wife while in good health. May he delay purifying himself until later in the morning, or should he perform dry ablution and pray? Give us your ruling; may you be rewarded.
