Majmu' al-Fatawa - Ibn Taimiya - (21/343)

Shaykh al-Islām—may Allah have mercy on him—was asked:

Is it preferable for someone in a state of major ritual impurity to sleep after performing ablution, or is it disliked for him to sleep without ablution? May he sleep in the mosque after performing ablution if he has no valid excuse?

He replied:

For someone in a state of major ritual impurity, it is recommended to perform ablution before eating, drinking, sleeping, or having intercourse again. However, it is disliked for him to sleep without performing ablution, for it is authentically reported that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was asked:

“May one of us sleep while in a state of major ritual impurity?”

He replied: “Yes, provided he performs ablution as he would for prayer.”

It is recommended for everyone to perform ablution before sleeping, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to a man:

“When you go to bed, perform ablution as you would for prayer, then say: ‘O Allah, I have submitted myself to You, turned my face towards You, entrusted my affairs to You, and placed myself under Your protection, in hope of You and fear of You. There is no refuge or escape from You except with You. I believe in Your Book which You have revealed, and Your Prophet whom You have sent.’”

وَسُئِلَ شَيْخُ الْإِسْلَامِ - رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ -: أَيُّمَا أَفْضَلُ لِلْجُنُبِ أَنْ يَنَامَ عَلَى وُضُوءٍ؟ أَوْ يُكْرَهُ لَهُ النَّوْمُ عَلَى غَيْرِ وُضُوءٍ؟ وَهَلْ يَجُوزُ لَهُ النَّوْمُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ إذَا تَوَضَّأَ مِنْ غَيْرِ عُذْرٍ أَمْ لَا؟ . فَأَجَابَ: الْجُنُبُ يُسْتَحَبُّ لَهُ الْوُضُوءُ إذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَأْكُلَ أَوْ يَشْرَبَ أَوْ يَنَامَ أَوْ يُعَاوِدَ الْوَطْءَ لَكِنْ يُكْرَهُ لَهُ النَّوْمُ إذَا لَمْ يَتَوَضَّأْ فَإِنَّهُ قَدْ ثَبَتَ فِي الصَّحِيحِ: {أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ سُئِلَ هَلْ يَرْقُدُ أَحَدُنَا وَهُوَ جُنُبٌ؟ فَقَالَ: نَعَمْ؛ إذَا تَوَضَّأَ لِلصَّلَاةِ} . وَيُسْتَحَبُّ الْوُضُوءُ عِنْدَ النَّوْمِ لِكُلِّ أَحَدٍ فَإِنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لِرَجُلِ: {إذَا أَخَذْت مَضْجَعَك فَتَوَضَّأْ وُضُوءَك لِلصَّلَاةِ ثُمَّ قُلْ: اللَّهُمَّ إنِّي أَسْلَمْت نَفَسِي إلَيْك وَوَجَّهْت وَجْهِي إلَيْك وَفَوَّضْت أَمْرِي إلَيْك وَأَلْجَأْت ظَهْرِي إلَيْك رَغْبَةً وَرَهْبَةً إلَيْك لَا مَلْجَأَ وَلَا مَنْجَا مِنْك إلَّا إلَيْك آمَنْت بِكِتَابِك الَّذِي أَنْزَلْت وَنَبِيِّك الَّذِي أَرْسَلْت} .
