He was asked:
“If a man performs the ritual bath without performing ablution, does that suffice?”
He replied:
It is preferable for him to perform ablution, then wash the rest of his body without repeating the ablution, as the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to do.
If he confines himself to the ritual bath without performing ablution, that suffices according to the well-known position in the schools of the four imams. However, according to Abū Hanīfah and Ahmad, he must rinse his mouth and draw water into his nostrils, whereas Mālik and al-Shāfiʿī do not require this. The scholars differ over whether he must intend to remove both major and minor states of ritual impurity. And Allah knows best.
