remains inside her. As for whether doing so is permissible, the scholars differ, and the more cautious course is not to do it. And Allah knows best.
He was asked:
“Is it authentically reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to perform the ritual bath with a sāʿ of water and ablution with a mudd? How much are these measures? Is using more than this disliked, given that people’s circumstances differ? Should one pour water repeatedly over the face during ablution?”
The Answer
He replied:
Expressed in Damascene units of weight, a sāʿ is approximately one ratl and two ūqiyyahs, and a mudd is a quarter of that. With economical and careful use, this suffices for most people. If someone occasionally needs more, there is nothing wrong with that. However, part of a person’s understanding of religion is not being overly preoccupied with water. The repeated scooping mentioned is disliked. Rather, when scooping up water, one should let it flow gently over the face from top to bottom. And Allah knows best.
