Thus, attachment to physical forms corrupts the mind, blinds inner vision, and intoxicates the heart—indeed, drives it mad. As has been said:

Two intoxications:
The intoxication of passion and the intoxication of wine—
When will one gripped by both regain his senses?

And it has been said:

They said, “Have you gone mad over the one you love?” I replied,
“Love is worse than what afflicts the mad.
The lover never regains his senses,
Whereas madness seizes its sufferer only from time to time.”

Allah, glorified be He, mentioned the verse of light immediately after the verses on lowering the gaze, saying:

“Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth.”

Shāh ibn Shujāʿ al-Kirmānī was never mistaken in his discernment. He used to say: “Whoever cultivates his outward conduct by following the Sunnah, and his inner self through constant awareness that Allah watches him; lowers his gaze from forbidden things; and restrains his desires”—and he mentioned a fifth quality, eating what is lawful—“will never be mistaken in his discernment.”

Allah Most High recompenses a servant for his deeds with something of the same kind. When he lowers his gaze from what is forbidden, Allah compensates him with something better of the same kind: He lets the light of his inner vision shine freely and opens for him
