Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

the one who reaches the truth and recognizes it receives two rewards and is more knowledgeable than he is—as with those who exercise their judgment to determine the direction of the Kaaba.

Ibn ‘Umar—may Allah be pleased with him—performed Hajj frequently and often gave people rulings concerning its rites. Towards the end of his life, people needed him, his knowledge, and his religious devotion, since Ibn ‘Abbās had died before him. Ibn ‘Umar issued rulings according to what he had heard and understood. Thus, some of his rulings were restrictive because of his scrupulousness and piety—may Allah be pleased with him and grant him contentment. He later retracted many of them, including his instruction that women should cut down their leather socks and that a menstruating woman should not depart until she had performed the farewell circumambulation, among others.

He would instruct men to cut down their leather socks because the report abrogating that instruction had not reached him. Ibn ‘Abbās, however, permitted men who could not find sandals to wear leather socks without cutting them down, on the basis of what he had heard from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, at ‘Arafāt.

Likewise, following ‘Umar, Ibn ‘Umar prohibited a pilgrim in ihram from using perfume until he had circumambulated the Kaaba. Sa‘d, Ibn ‘Abbās, and other Companions, however, had learned through ‘Ā’ishah—may Allah be pleased with her—of the practice of Allah’s Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace: he perfumed himself before entering ihram and upon coming out of it, before circumambulating the House. They therefore followed that practice.

Similarly, Ibn ‘Umar—may Allah be pleased with him—held that when a pilgrim in ihram died, his ihram had ended. Thus, when his son died, he shrouded him in five pieces of cloth, and he was followed in this by
