Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

hear him specify more than three designated places for entering the consecrated state:

“The people of Medina are to enter at Dhū al-Hulayfah, the people of Syria at al-Juhfah, and the people of Najd at Qarn.”

Ibn Umar said: “I was told—though I did not hear it myself—that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, designated Yalamlam for the people of Yemen.” What he was told is authentic: it is established in the two Sahīh collections through Ibn Abbas’s narration from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. Ibn Abbas reported:

“The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, designated Yalamlam for the people of Yemen, Dhū al-Hulayfah for the people of Medina, al-Juhfah for the people of Syria, Qarn al-Manāzil for the people of Najd, and Yalamlam for the people of Yemen. He said: ‘These places are for their respective peoples and for anyone else who passes through them intending to perform Hajj or Umrah. Anyone closer to Mecca is to enter the consecrated state from wherever he sets out, including the people of Mecca, who enter it from Mecca.’”

Thus, Ibn Abbas possessed knowledge of this sunnah that Ibn Umar did not. His hadith mentions four designated places and explains the rulings for everyone, whether they pass through those places or enter the consecrated state from somewhere closer to Mecca.

The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, conveyed the religion as Allah commanded him. When the people of Medina, the people of Najd, and those from the direction of Syria had embraced Islam, he designated the three places. The people of Yemen embraced Islam only later. For this reason, most of them did not see the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace; rather, they had lived through both the pre-Islamic and Islamic periods without seeing him. When they embraced Islam, the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, designated their place and said:

“The people of Yemen have come to you. Their hearts are more tender and more gentle. Faith is Yemeni, understanding of religion is Yemeni, and wisdom is Yemeni.”
