the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, until after Khaybar, which came after al-Hudaybiyah. The truce concluded between him and the polytheists at al-Hudaybiyah stipulated that he would not allow any of their people to emigrate to him, while they would not return anyone who left him as an apostate and went over to them.

These men and others like them were among the oppressed believers in Mecca whom their own people held under their control. The Muslims in question were all from Banū Makhzūm; they, together with Banū ‘Abd Manāf, were the noblest clans of Quraysh. Banū Makhzūm were the ones who competed with ‘Abd Manāf in prestige. Their mutual jealousy was one of the things that prevented their leading men—such as al-Walīd, Abū Jahl and others—from embracing Islam.

When some emigrants arrived after al-Hudaybiyah and made their way to the seashore—such as Abū Basīr and Abū Jandal ibn Suhayl ibn ‘Amr—they were left to fend for themselves on the coast, since the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, had not granted them protection because of the treaty’s stipulation. They intercepted the people of Mecca until the Meccans sent word to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, asking him to allow them to stay with him so that they themselves would be safe from these raids. Those oppressed believers then arrived, and the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, discontinued the qunūt.

This qunūt came after the qunūt reported by Anas:

“The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, recited qunūt for a month, supplicating against Ri‘l, Dhakwān and ‘Usayyah, then discontinued it.”

That qunūt occurred in the early period, when he sent the seventy Quran reciters—the men of Bi’r Ma‘ūnah. This was earlier, before the Battle of the Trench, which preceded al-Hudaybiyah, as
