The evidence for this is the Prophet’s prohibition—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—of the hides of beasts of prey. Usāmah ibn ʿUmayr al-Dhuhlī reported:

“The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—forbade the hides of beasts of prey.”

Reported by Ahmad, Abū Dāwūd, and al-Nasāʾī. Al-Tirmidhī adds: “to be spread out as furnishings.”

Khālid ibn Maʿdān said:

“Al-Miqdām ibn Maʿdīkarib visited Muʿāwiyah and asked, ‘I adjure you by Allah: do you know that the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—forbade the hides of beasts of prey and riding upon them?’ He replied, ‘Yes.’”

Reported by Abū Dāwūd and al-Nasāʾī; this is the latter’s wording.

Abū Rayhānah reported:

“The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—forbade riding upon leopard skins.”

Reported by Ahmad, Abū Dāwūd, and Ibn Mājah.

Abū Dāwūd and al-Nasāʾī narrated from Muʿāwiyah that the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said:

“The angels do not accompany a group of travellers who have a leopard skin with them.”

Reported by Abū Dāwūd. This view reconciles all the hadiths. And Allah knows best.

Shaykh al-Islām was asked:

Are the bones, hooves, horns, claws, hair, feathers, and rennet of an animal that has died without lawful slaughter all impure, all pure, or are some pure and others impure?

He replied:

As for the bones, horns, and claws of such an animal, and anything of the same kind as
