As for the Prophet’s prohibition, peace and blessings be upon him, against “one who wakes from a night’s sleep dipping his hand into a vessel before washing it three times,” there is agreement that this does not imply that the water becomes impure. Rather, it may be because doing so affects the water in some way and may lead to a change in it. This prohibition is no stronger than the prohibition against urinating in standing water, which, as explained above, does not indicate that the water becomes impure.

Moreover, the two Sahīh collections report from Abū Hurayrah:

“When one of you wakes from sleep, let him expel water from his nostrils, for Satan spends the night inside his nose.”

This establishes that such washing is not occasioned by impurity; rather, its stated reason is Satan’s spending the night inside the nose.

The well-known hadith,

“For none of you knows where his hand has spent the night,”

may refer to this. This would therefore be one of the operative causes whose relevance is attested by the revealed text.

As for his prohibition against bathing in the water after urinating in it, if this is authentically reported from the Prophet
