Thus, when He says:
“Indeed, I am Allah. There is no deity except Me,”
the reference is to Allah Himself. And when He says:
“My servant continues to draw near to Me through voluntary acts of worship until I love him. When I love him, I am his hearing with which he hears, his sight with which he sees, his hand with which he grasps, and his foot with which he walks. Through Me he hears, through Me he sees, through Me he grasps, and through Me he walks,”
and when He says:
“My servant, I was ill, but you did not visit Me.”
He replies: “My Lord, how could I visit You when You are the Lord of all worlds?”
He says: “Did you not know that My servant so-and-so was ill? Had you visited him, you would have found Me with him,”
what is in the hearts of believers is faith in Allah, knowledge of Him, and love for Him. This may be expressed as “the highest likeness” or “the mental representation.” One also says, “You are in my heart,” as in the verse:
Your image is before my eyes, your mention upon my lips;
Your dwelling is within my heart—how, then, could you be absent?
It is also said:
He dwells within the heart and fills it;
I never forget him, that I should have to recall him.
It is also related that David, peace be upon him, said:
“You dwell in the hearts of the righteous.”
It is well known that none of this means that the very One remembered, known, and loved is what is meant by “the mental representation.” And the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
