And the hadith concerning the three to whom Allah will neither speak, nor look at, nor purify, and who will suffer a painful punishment, has already been cited. Among them is one who withholds his surplus water. He also cursed the seller of wine, although some of the early scholars sold it.

It has been authentically reported from him through several chains of transmission that he said:

“Whoever drags his lower garment out of pride, Allah will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection.”

He also said:

“There are three to whom Allah will neither speak, nor look at on the Day of Resurrection, nor purify, and who will suffer a painful punishment: one who lets his garment trail, one who reminds others of his favors, and one who sells his goods by swearing falsely.”

Yet a group of jurists say that dragging one’s garment and letting it trail out of pride is disliked, not forbidden. Likewise, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

“May Allah curse the woman who adds hair extensions and the woman who has them added.”

This is among the most authentic hadiths, yet there is a well-known disagreement over adding hair extensions.

Likewise, he said:

“Whoever drinks from silver vessels is only gulping the fire of Hell into his belly.”

Yet some scholars did not consider this forbidden.

(Seventh: The grounds for general application are present, and the objection mentioned cannot validly counter them. At most, it may be said that applying the wording to both agreed-upon and disputed cases necessarily includes some who do not deserve to be cursed. The response is: if restricting its scope runs counter to the basic presumption, then multiplying such restrictions also runs counter to that presumption. Thus, an exception to this general scope is made for
