Those followers of the imams who deviate in fundamentals and subsidiary matters—such as certain Khurāsānīs from Jīlān and elsewhere who affiliate themselves with Ahmad or other imams—deviate in several ways:
First: A view that neither the imam nor any of his followers known for their learning ever expressed. Examples include the claims made by some of them that the human soul and the light of the sun, the moon, and fires are beginningless. Some of their later followers also asserted that human speech is beginningless, that people will become mute when the Quran is taken away, that the adherents of legal reasoning are unbelievers, that Abū So-and-so should be cursed, and that the ink used in copies of the Quran is beginningless.
Second: A view expressed in error by one of the scholars among the imam’s followers, such as the claim that a person’s voice is beginningless, or the transmission of weak hadiths cited as evidence from the Sunnah concerning the divine attributes, divine decree, the Quran, virtues, and similar matters.
