Allah ﷺ loved nothing but what is pure. (1) She replied, “And?” He continued, “When your necklace was lost at al-Abwāʾ (2), the Messenger of Allah ﷺ spent the morning searching for it. The people found no water, (3) so Allah revealed: “Then perform tayammum with clean earth.” (4) That concession came about because of you and through your blessing—the greatest facilitation Allah, exalted is He, ever granted to this ummah. Then came the incident involving Mistah, whatever it was, (5) and Allah sent down your vindication from above the seven heavens. There is no mosque in which Allah is remembered except that your story is recited there throughout the watches of the night and the ends of the day. (6)

(2) al-Abwa: a village in the al-Faraʿ district of Medina, located on the road to al-Juhfa about 23 miles from Medina, which contains the tomb of Amina bint Wahb, the Prophet’s mother. See: Muʿjam al-Buldan, vol. 1, p. 79.

(4) Surah al-Maʾida, verse 6.
(5) Masṭaḥḥ ibn Athatha ibn ʿAbbad ibn al-Muttalib ibn ʿAbd Manaf ibn Qusay al-Muttalibi. His given name was ʿAwfa, while Masṭaḥḥ was his nickname. His mother was a maternal cousin of Abu Bakr. He was among those involved in the slander against ʿĀʾisha; God then revealed ten verses vindicating her at the beginning of Surah al-Nūr, and the Prophet ﷺ ordered the flogging of Masṭaḥḥ and the others involved, enacting the hadd for slander in obedience to God’s command. See: Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr, vol. 6, p. 19; al-Isāba, vol. 6, p. 93.
(6) Reported by Abū Nuʿaym in al-Hilya, vol. 2, p. 45; by al-Dārimī in his Refutation of the Jahmiyya, p. 22; and in his Refutation of Bishr al-Muraysī, p. 15, on the authority of Ibn Abī Mulayka, who relayed from Dhakwān, the chamberlain of ʿĀʾisha, that Ibn ʿAbbās entered upon her as she was dying… Neither ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Bakr nor any other person is mentioned. Ibn Kathīr also includes it in al-Bidāya wa-l-Nihāya, vol. 8, pp. 93–94. It is further transmitted by al-Ḥākim in his Mustadrak, vol. 4, p. 8, who deemed its isnād sound, though neither al-Bukhārī nor Muslim recorded it; al-Ḏhahabī affirmed this in his Talkhīṣ al-Mustadrak.
(7) In other manuscripts: “Muḥammad” only.
(8) In other manuscripts: “Ḥamad.”
