Ithbāt Ṣifat al-ʿUlūIbn Qudama
  1. Muḥammad narrated to us; Ḥamad informed us; Abū Nuʿaym reported; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad transmitted; Muḥammad ibn Shibl transmitted; Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah transmitted; Wakīʿ transmitted, from Ismāʿīl, from Qays, who said:

When ʿUmar arrived in Syria, the people came out to welcome him while he was riding his camel. They said, “O Commander of the Believers, if only you would ride a fine mount so that the great and eminent men could meet you!” He replied, “I do not see the matter beginning here; rather, the matter begins from Here,” and he pointed with his hand toward the sky (1).

  1. Abū ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-Barr said: We have been related through several chains from ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb—may Allah be pleased with him—that he once went out accompanied by some people. He passed by an elderly woman who stopped him, so he stopped and began speaking with her while she spoke to him. A man said, “O Commander of the Believers, you have detained the people because of this old woman!” He replied, “Woe to you! Do you know who she is? This is a woman whose complaint Allah heard from above the seven heavens—this is Khawlah bint Thaʿlabah, concerning whom Allah revealed: ‘Allah has indeed heard the words of her who disputes with you about her husband and complains to Allah’ (2). By Allah, if she were to stand here until nightfall, I would not leave her except—"
(1) al-Dhahabi, al-‘Ulu, p. 62, noting that its isnad is “as clear as the sun.” al-Albani, al-Mukhtasar, p. 103, affirms it as sahih by the criteria of both Shaykhs. Also transmitted in Abu Nu‘aym, al-Hilya, vol. 1, p. 47; Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shayba, al-Musannaf, vol. 13, nos. 15691 and 16290 (pp. 40, 263); and al-Darimi, al-Radd ‘ala al-Jahmiyya, p. 21. (2) Sura al-Mujadila 58:1. The “disputing woman” (al-mujadila) in this report is Khawla bint Tha‘labah, wife of Aws ibn al-Samit; her marital dispute prompted the revelation of this verse (see Ibn Kathir, Tafsir, vol. 8, p. 61). The narrative illustrates Allah’s greatness and His all-encompassing hearing: although Khawla spoke privately with the Prophet (peace be upon him) while ʿA’isha was nearby and could not hear her, Allah—exalted above the heavens—heard her plea, as related in Musnad Ahmad 6:46 and cited by al-Bukhari in the Book of Tawhid, chapter “Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing” (vol. 13, p. 372). This example underscores that no created being possesses such an attribute, refuting the Jahmiyya’s denial of divine hearing.
