47- Muhammad ibn ʿAbd al-Baqi informed us; Hamad ibn Ahmad al-Haddad (1) likewise informed us. Abu Nuʿaym informed us; my father and Muhammad ibn Ahmad both narrated, saying: al-Hasan narrated to us; Muhammad ibn Humayd narrated to us; Yaʿqub, from Jaʿfar, from Saʿid ibn Jubayr, who said:
A drought afflicted the people during the reign of one of the kings of the Children of Israel for three years. The king declared, “Allah will surely make the sky pour down upon us, or we will harm Him.” His courtiers asked, “How can you possibly harm or anger Him when He is in heaven and you are on earth?” He replied, “I will kill His allies among the people on earth.” Saʿid said: So Allah sent the rain down upon them. (1) The isnad to “al-Haddad” does not appear in the original manuscript; instead it reads “Qala Ahmad” (he said Ahmad), referring to Abu Nu‘aym, who then relayed the chain. The wording I have supplied is found in other copies.
(2) It was narrated by Abu Nu‘aym in al-Hilya (vol. 4, p. 282) and by al-Dhahabi in al-‘Uluw (p. 92), who remarked: “a hadith whose isnad I have forgotten.” However, he recorded it with its isnad in Siyar A‘lam al-Nubala (vol. 4, p. 333). The chain includes Muhammad ibn Humayd ibn Hayyan al-Razi. Al-Hafiz declared him da‘if (weak), whereas Ibn Ma‘in held a good opinion of him; he belonged to the tenth generation (tabaqa) and died in 130 AH. See al-Taqrib (vol. 2, p. 156).
