Ithbāt Ṣifat al-ʿUlūIbn Qudama

from Qatadah, from al-Hasan, who said:

Jonah—peace be upon him—heard the pebbles glorifying Allah and the fish doing the same. Thereupon he began to glorify, pronounce the tahlil (There is no god but Allah), and proclaim His holiness. In his supplication he would say:

“My Master, Your abode is in the heaven, while on earth lie Your power and Your wonders. My Master, from the mountains You made me descend, through the lands You made me journey, and within the threefold darkness You confined me. My God, You have imprisoned me with a confinement You never imposed on anyone before me; my God, You have punished me with a punishment You never inflicted on anyone before me.”

When forty full days had elapsed and grief pressed heavily upon him, he cried out in the darknesses, “There is no god but You; glory be to You! Indeed, I was of the wrongdoers.” (1)

46- I read to Abu al-‘Abbas Ahmad ibn al-Mubarak ibn Saʿd ibn al-Murraqiʿati; your grandfather, Abu al-Maʿali Thabit ibn Bundar ibn Ibrahim al-Baqqal, informed you; he said: Abu ‘Ali al-Hasan ibn al-Husayn ibn al-‘Abbas ibn Duma informed us; Abu ‘Ali Makhlad ibn Jaʿfar al-Baqarahi (2) informed us; Abu Muhammad al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali narrated to us; Ismaʿil ibn ‘Isa al-‘Attar informed us; Abu Hudhayfah Ishaq ibn Bishr (3) informed us; from Juwaybir, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn ‘Abbas—may Allah be pleased with him—who said:

The wife of al-‘Aziz said to Joseph—peace be upon him—“O Joseph! I possess a great quantity of pearls, rubies, and emeralds. I will give you all of it so that you may spend it (4) seeking the pleasure of your Master who is in heaven.” (5)

(1) I did not find any transmitter except adh-Dhahabi in al-Uluw, who cites part of it, saying: “The hadith of Abu Hudhayfa in al-Bukhari’s collection.” He then presents the isnad as transmitted here from Hudhayfa, who is Ishaq. He then states: “Abu Hudhayfa is a liar.” I note that this Abu Hudhayfa is Ishaq ibn Bishr, whose condition was previously explained in hadith no. (28); see there. Hence, the report is very weak. (2) al-Baqirhi: a nisba relating to Baqirh, a village near Baghdad. See al-Lubab 1:112. (3) In other manuscripts the isnad appears abbreviated as follows: “And Ahmad informed us; he said: My grandfather informed us; Abu Ali ibn Duma informed us; Mukhlad informed us; al-Hasan informed us; Ismail narrated; Ishaq informed us.” (4) The original reads “tunfiq” (you spend); the emendation is from other copies. (5) adh-Dhahabi records it in al-Uluw (p. 88), stating: “The hadith of Juwaybir ibn Said—who is weak—on the authority of al-Dhahhak…” and adds: “Its isnad is strong from Juwaybir.” I say that this is undoubtedly a mistake by Imam adh-Dhahabi, since the narrator from Juwaybir is Abu Hudhayfa Ishaq ibn Bishr—whose status was explained above—so the hadith is no less weak than the previous one. As for Juwaybir ibn Said, he is Abu al-Qasim al-Azdi al-Balkhi the exegete, companion of al-Dhahhak. Ibn Main said: “He is nothing.” al-Jawzjani said: “One should not concern oneself with him.” al-Nasai, al-Daraqutni, and others declared him abandoned. See al-Mizan 1:427. On al-Dhahhak’s encounter with Ibn Abbas there is a disputed account; see al-Siyar 4:599.
