Ithbāt Ṣifat al-ʿUlūIbn Qudama

under the Throne, while his feet are in the seventh depths. The Throne itself rests upon his shoulders, and at times he contracts from awe of Allah until he becomes like a waṣʿ—that is, like a sparrow—so that nothing upholds the Throne of your Lord except His sheer majesty.

(1) In the archetype and in manuscript M the reading liyatdal appears without the hamza, as also attested in M and R. (2) In the archetype, “yā man” occurs with the added vocative particle yā. (3) al-waṣʿ and al-waṣīʿ denote the young of small birds; others specify the nestlings of fledglings. See al-Lisān, root waṣʿ. (4) This report is transmitted by Ibn al-Mubārak in his Kitāb al-Zuhd (p. 74) from Ibn Shihāb. Al-Suyūṭī also records it in al-Ḥabāʾik fī Akhbār al-Malakīk (p. 22), citing a passage from al-Lisān when clarifying the meaning of al-waṣʿ. The report is extremely weak due to the presence of Isḥāq ibn Bushr, whose unreliability has been noted above. See also the commentary on the Hadith of Jābir’s Rihla, no. (28).
