Ithbāt Ṣifat al-ʿUlūIbn Qudama

al-Hasan ibn Sufyan narrated to us; ʿAbdullah ibn ʿUmar ibn Aban narrated to us; Marwan ibn Muʿawiyah (1) from ʿUbayd Allah ibn ʿAbd Allah, from Yazid ibn al-Asamm (2), from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) (3), who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Since the moment he was entrusted with it, the Bearer of the ṣūr (4) has not blinked; he remains poised, his gaze fixed upon the Throne, fearing that he might be commanded before his eyelid can return. It is as though his two eyes were two dazzling, radiant stars.” (5)

(1) In manuscripts R and H the reading “Harun” is erroneous. (2) Other copies read “Zayd,” which is incorrect. (3) From manuscript H. (4) The “owner of al-ṣuwar” is Israfil (peace be upon him); as for al-ṣūr (the trumpet), al-Lisan (entry “ṣūr,” vol. 4:475) explains that al-ṣūr is the horn (qarn). Exegetes interpret “Then when the trumpet is blown” (Quran 23:101) accordingly. Abu al-Haytham reports that some denied al-ṣūr being a horn—just as they denied the Throne, the scale and the path—claiming instead that “ṣūr” is the plural of “ṣūrah,” a view wrongly attributed to Abu Ubayda; he condemns this as a gross distortion of Allah’s words. Ibn Kathir and al-Tabari affirm that al-ṣūr is the horn into which Israfil blows. This is supported by hadiths in which the Prophet (peace be upon him) said that Israfil has repaired the trumpet and awaits the command to blow, and by the report to a Bedouin that al-ṣūr is “the horn into which it is blown” (narrated by Ahmad, Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi and al-Hakim). See Maḥāsin al-Taʾwīl (al-Qasimi, 6:2367) and Tafsir Ibn Kathir (3:276). The reference to “looking towards the Throne” in these narrations both affirms the trumpet and the divine Throne upon which the Merciful is established. (5) This hadith is recorded by al-Hakim in al-Mustadrak (4:559), who considered it sound; al-Dhahabi concurred in his summary, adding that it meets Muslim’s criteria (see the marginal note). Sheikh al-Albani, in Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Sahihah (3:65), contested al-Dhahabi’s remark, arguing that al-Fazzari—a transmitter in al-Hakim’s chain—is actually among Muslim’s narrators, not his teachers, and that Ibn Malas (via al-Fazzari) is not recorded by Muslim, though deemed trustworthy by Ibn Abi Hatim; hence the hadith would not fulfill Muslim’s conditions. However, Ibn Abi al-Shaykh transmitted it in Kitab al-ʿImah (3:964) via Abu Kuraib Muhammad ibn al-ʿAla’, one of Muslim’s teachers, thus validating al-Dhahabi’s statement. Al-Albani later aligned with al-Dhahabi in Mukhtasar al-ʿUlū (p. 93), affirming “on the condition of Muslim.” Abu al-Shaykh also cites another supporting isnad from Ibn Abbas (3:967).
