Ithbāt Ṣifat al-ʿUlūIbn Qudama

“Come to what you are seeking!” They then gather round those people—meaning, they encircle them (1). When the gathering disperses, the angels ascend to heaven. Allah, exalted is He, asks, “What did you leave My servants doing?” They answer, “We left them praising You, glorifying You, and remembering You.” He says, “Have they seen Me?” They reply, “No.” He says, “And how would it be if they had seen Me?” They say, “If they had seen You, they would praise, glorify, and remember You even more.”

He says, “What are they asking of Me?” They reply, “They are asking for Paradise.” He says, “Have they seen it?” They say, “No.” He says, “And how would it be if they had seen it?” They say, “If they had seen it, they would desire it more intensely and strive for it more eagerly.”

He says, “From what are they seeking refuge?” They reply, “They seek refuge from the Fire.” He says, “Have they seen it?” They say, “No.” He says, “And how would it be if they had seen it?” They say, “If they had seen it, they would flee from it all the more and be even more fearful and intent on seeking protection from it.”

He says, “I call you to witness that I have forgiven them.” They say, “Among them is so-and-so, a habitual sinner; he was not really one of them—he only came for some need.” He says, “They are a people whose companion will never be wretched in their company,” and he said it twice (2).

(1) This reading appears in all manuscripts and is not found in other hadith collections. (2) This hadith is agreed upon. See: Sahih al-Bukhari with commentary, Book of Supplications, Chapter on the Excellence of Remembrance of Allah, hadith no. 6408, vol. 11:208–209; Sahih Muslim, Book of Remembrance, Supplication, Repentance, and Seeking Forgiveness, Chapter on the Excellence of Gatherings for Remembrance, hadith no. 4689, vol. 4:2069. It is also narrated by al-Tirmidhi in his Book of Supplications, Chapter on What Was Reported Concerning Allah’s Angels Traversing the Earth, hadith no. 3600, vol. 5:579; and by Ahmad in his Musnad (2:251, 359, 382). The author cites this hadith to demonstrate that Allah is on the ‘ala (the Highest), since the Prophet ﷺ reported that the angels ascend to Him, and “ascending” denotes rising to a higher place. See Lisan al-Arab, root sa‘ada (to ascend). Earlier it was mentioned that the angels ‘araja (ascend) to Him. This confirms that Allah is on the High, contrary to the negators (al-mu‘attila) and the proponents of hululiyya (incarnationism) among the innovators. (3) In other manuscripts: “Ahmad,” a repeated error noted above. (4) In other manuscripts: “Abu Nu‘aym,” which is his kunya. (5) In the manuscripts labeled (h) and (r): “Hamdan,” which is an error.
