Ithbāt Ṣifat al-ʿUlūIbn Qudama

Bishran informed us; Abu ‘Ali Ahmad ibn al-Fadl ibn al-‘Abbas ibn Khuzaimah reported to us; ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn ibn Yazid (1) al-Suda’i narrated to us; my father narrated to us; al-Walid ibn al-Qasim narrated to us, from Yazid ibn Kaysan, from Abu Hazim, from Abu Hurayrah—may Allah be pleased with him—who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “No servant ever says la ilaha illa Allah (there is no deity but Allah) sincerely except that it rises upward; no veil can hold it back. When it reaches Allah, He gazes upon the one who uttered it, and it is a binding promise upon Allah that He never looks upon a believer in His oneness without showing him mercy.” (2)

  1. The chief, Abu al-‘Izz Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Mawahib al-Khurasani, informed us; Abu al-Husayn ibn al-Tuyuri reported to us; Muhammad ibn ‘Ali ibn al-Fath al-Harbi (3) reported to us; Abu Hafs ibn Shahin narrated to us; Muhammad ibn Makhlad narrated to us; ‘Abdus ibn Bashir narrated to us; ‘Abd al-‘Aziz ibn ‘Abd al-Wahid al-‘Asqalani narrated to us; Abu Nu‘aym (4) ‘Umar ibn Subh narrated to us, from
(1) It originally read “bin Zayd,” which is incorrect. See his biography in al-Khaṭīb al-Baghdadī’s Tarikḥ Baghdad, vol. 11, p. 394. (2) Al-Ṭirmidhī records it in his Book of Supplications via al-Ḥusayn ibn ‘Ali ibn Yazīd from al-Walīd ibn al-Qāsim, and classifies it as hasan gharīb (good but rare), Ḥadīth no. 3590 (5:575). Al-Dhahabī includes it in al-‘Uluww (p. 36), calling it “strange.” Al-Albānī cites it in Silsilah al-Ahādīth al-Ḍa‘īfah (Ḥ919; 2:320), labeling it munkar (rejected), and notes its transmission by Ibn Bishrān in al-Amālī (1:70; 2:108) and by al-Khaṭīb al-Baghdādī in Tarikḥ Baghdad (11:394). He reports no criticism or praise of the narrator ‘Ali ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn Yazīd al-Ṣadā’ī (d. 286 AH), who was also transmitted on by Abū Bakr al-Shāfi‘ī and Abū ‘Alī Aḥmad ibn al-Faḍl ibn Khuzaymah. Al-Albānī further argues that, given this narrator’s deviation from Ṭirmidhī’s own wording—though he has few chains—the narrator must be weak; hence he adopts Ṭirmidhī’s version in his Sahīḥ al-Ahādīth wa’l-Mishkāt (no. 2314). (3) Other manuscripts read “al-Hawlī.” (4) Other manuscripts read “Abū al-Qāsim,” which is incorrect.
