Ithbāt Ṣifat al-ʿUlūIbn Qudama

…

The evidences from the Book and the Sunnah establishing this issue have already been presented, and more will follow. As for the second issue, it is the question of the Vision. This is one of the most important topics addressed by the Salaf, for the Qur’an and the Sunnah are in full agreement on the believers’ vision of their Lord on the Day of Resurrection, and that this constitutes the highest bliss of the inhabitants of Paradise. Allah says: “Faces, that Day, will be radiant, looking at their Lord” (al-Qiyāmah 75:23–24), and: “They will have whatever they wish therein, and with Us is more” (Qāf 50:35), and: “For those who have done good is the best [reward] and extra” (Yūnus 10:26). The Salaf interpreted the “extra” mentioned in these two verses as referring to the vision of the Face of Allah. See al-Bayhaqī, al-I‘tiqād, pp. 48–49. Further evidence for this interpretation appears in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim in the report from Suhayb, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stated: “When the people of Paradise enter, it will be called out: ‘O people of Paradise, you have an appointment with Allah that you have not yet seen.’ They will ask: ‘What is it? Has He not made our faces white, delivered us from the Fire, and admitted us into Paradise?’ Then the veil will be lifted, and they will behold Him. By Allah, there is nothing that Allah has given them that they love more than that.” Then He recited: “For those who have done good is the best [reward] and extra.” (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Book of Faith, chapter on the believers’ vision of their Lord in the Hereafter, hadith no. 181, vol. 1/163.) Imam al-Bukhārī likewise collected a series of hadith affirming this vision, among them the report of Jirrīr ibn ‘Abd Allāh al-Bajjalī, who said: “We were sitting with the Prophet ﷺ when he looked at the full moon one night and said: ‘You will see your Lord as you see this moon; you will not be confounded in seeing Him...’” He compiled numerous other reports that explicitly establish this matter. (See Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī with the commentary al-Fatḥ al-Bārī, Book of Tawḥīd, chapter on the saying of Allah: “Faces, that Day, will be radiant, looking at their Lord,” hadith nos. 7434–7447; al-Fatḥ al-Bārī 13:419–424.) The affirmation of the vision by these evidences is the unanimous view of the Salaf and is concurred in by the Ashʿarīs. Imam ‘Uthmān ibn Sa‘īd al-Dārimī, expounding the Salafī position, says: “All of these hadith—and many more—have been transmitted concerning the vision, affirming it and strengthening belief in it. Our jurists and scholars among our shaykhs have upheld it, and Muslims of old and new have continuously narrated it and believed in it, never rejecting or denying it; and whoever among the people of deviation denies it is accused of misguidance. Indeed, one of their greatest hopes and the most generous reward from Allah that they cherish is the vision of the Face of their Creator; they would not exchange it for any other delight of Paradise.” (Al-Radd ‘alā al-Jahmiyya, pp. 53–54.) He also said: “The reports on this matter from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, from those who came after him among the scholars, and from the Book of Allah have been firmly established...”
