Ithbāt Ṣifat al-ʿUlūIbn Qudama

the Banu Hashim; then He selected me. Thus I have always been the best of the best. Hear me: whoever loves Quraysh, I love him out of my love for them; and whoever detests the Arabs, I detest him because of my detestation of them. (1)

30 – Muhammad (some transmit: Hamd) informed us (2); Ahmad informed us—Sulayman narrated to us, as did al-Miqdam ibn Dawud (3); ʿAli ibn Maʿbad narrated to us; Wahb ibn Rashid narrated from Farqad, from Anas, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

(1) Al-Dhahabi cites it in al-‘Uluw, p. 23, stating: “It was transmitted by Hamad ibn Waqid from Muḥammad ibn Dhakwān, one of the weak narrators. Some include ʿAbd Allāh ibn Dīnār in the chain. It is a munkar (rejected) hadith. It was related by several compilers in their Sunan, and Ibn Khuzayma recorded it in his al-Tawḥīd.” I note that it also appears in al-Ṭabarānī’s al-Kabīr (no. 13650), 12/455; in Abū Nuʿaym’s Dalāʾil al-Nubuwwa; and in al-ʿUqaylī’s al-Duʿafāʾ—via Yazīd ibn ʿAwāna from Muḥammad ibn Dhakwān—with the comment lā yutābiʿ ʿalayh (it has no corroborating chains), 4/388. Ibn ʿAdī includes it in al-Kāmil (2/555; 6/2207). Al-Albānī lists it in Silsilat al-Aḥādīth al-Ḍaʿīfa (1/345), declaring it “very weak.” As for Muḥammad ibn Dhakwān—the pivotal weak link—al-Nasāʾī judged him “not reliable,” al-Bukhārī labeled his hadiths munkar, and al-Daraqutnī called him weak. See al-Mīzān 3/542; Al-Duʿafāʾ al-Ṣaghīr li’l-Bukhārī, p. 206; Al-Duʿafāʾ wa’l-Matrūkīn li’l-Daraqutnī, p. 348; and Al-Tahdhīb 9/156. Al-Haythamī records it in Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid 8/215, noting: “It includes Hamad ibn Waqid—weak, though usable—and its other narrators are deemed reliable.” He fails, however, to specify the defect in the chain, since all routes that pass through Hamad ibn Waqid derive from his narration of Muḥammad ibn Dhakwān, thus presenting two defects rather than one. Al-Hākim includes it in his al-Mustadrak 4/86–87 via another route—from ʿAmr ibn Dīnār through Sālim ibn ʿAbd Allāh from Ibn ʿUmar—in a brief raised (marfūʿ) report. Al-Albānī comments: “Its isnād contains narrators for whom I found no biographies.” (Silsilat al-Aḥādīth al-Ḍaʿīfa 1/345). Ibn Abī Ḥātim records it in his Al-ʿIlal (2/367–368) by the first route—i.e. the same as the author’s—with the remark: “My father said: ‘This is a munkar hadith.’” Al-Dhahabi concurs in al-Mīzān. (2) In manuscript (M) it reads “Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad,” and the same error is repeated in three other copies, where “Aḥmad” appears instead of “Hamad,” as noted above. The correct figures are Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Bāqī and Ḥamad ibn Aḥmad al-Ḥaddād ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥāfiẓ. (3) In other copies it reads “thana Sulaymān ibn Dāwūd,” which is a scribal mistake.
