However, Dr. Nur al-Din ‘Itr maintains—in his commentary on Kitāb al-Riḥla by al-Khaṭīb—that this Abu al-Jārūd is not the Ziyād ibn al-Mundhir mentioned elsewhere. He supports his view with three arguments:
1- In al-Baghdādī’s account, Abu al-Jārūd is described as ʿAbsī, whereas Ziyād ibn al-Mundhir is either Nahdī or Hamdānī.
2- The Abu Jārūd of this hadith is an early Tābiʿī who transmits from Jābir and is himself narrated by Muqātil ibn Ḥayān, while Ziyād ibn al-Mundhir is later and has no narrations from the Companions.
3- Al-Ḥāfiẓ said of the isnād via Abu al-Jārūd: “therein is weakness,” whereas Ziyād ibn al-Mundhir is categorically a liar whose transmissions have perished; one would say of his isnād “wah” (utterly deficient) rather than merely “there is weakness.”
In my view, Dr. ‘Itr’s position is plausible, yet I have found no bearer of the kunya Abu al-Jārūd other than Ziyād ibn al-Mundhir.
In the same chain as given by al-Khaṭīb, the next narrator is ʿUmar ibn al-Ṣubh (Ibn ʿImrān al-Tamīmī al-ʿAdawī al-Khurāsānī), who transmits from Muqātil. Isḥāq ibn Rahwayh remarked: “Khurāsān produced three men unequalled in falsehood and innovation: Jahm ibn Ṣafwān, ʿAmr ibn al-Ṣubh, and Muqātil ibn Sulaymān.” Abu Ḥātim called him a hadith denier; Ibn Ḥibbān said he fabricates from the trustworthy; al-Azdī labeled him a liar; and al-Daraqutnī declared him abandoned. (See Tahdhīb al-Kamāl 7:462.) Hence, as al-Dhahabī noted, the hadith is virtually fabricated.
Nonetheless, the episode of Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh is corroborated by other chains. Al-Bukhārī transmits part of it in Kitāb al-Tawḥīd (chapter on the verse “And intercession does not benefit with Him except for the one He has permitted”; Fath al-Bārī 13:453) and cites it in Kitāb al-ʿIlm (chapter on setting out to seek knowledge, 1:173). Al-Khaṭīb also records it in al-Riḥla via another route (h 31, 32, pp. 109–114) through ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAqīl ibn Abī Ṭālib, that Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh reported: “I heard from a Companion of the Messenger of Allāh (peace and blessings be upon him), whose name I could not learn. He said: ‘I bought a camel, packed my baggage, and traveled for a month until I reached al-Shām. There I met ʿAbd Allāh ibn Anīs al-Anṣārī. I sent word that Jābir was at the gate. He went back to the Messenger of Allāh, who asked: “Is that Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh?” He replied: “Yes.” The Messenger then said: “Let him in.” He came out, embraced me, and I embraced him.’ He said:
