Ithbāt Ṣifat al-ʿUlūIbn Qudama

27- Muhammad informed us (1); Ahmad ibn al-Hasan related to us; Abu al-Qasim (2) ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn ʿUbayd Allah al-Harfi related to us; he said (3): Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Sulayman al-Najjad narrated to us, Muhammad ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Sulayman narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr narrated to us, Zāʾidah ibn Abi al-Raqqād narrated to us, from Ziyād al-Numayri, from Anas ibn Malik — may Allah be pleased with him — (4), from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: “Then I shall come before my Lord — exalted is He — while He is upon His Throne,” in the hadith of intercession (5).

(1) In other manuscripts: “Muhammad ibn Abd al-Baqi.” (2) In the (mss.): “al-Qasim.” (3) The word “qala” is not found in the other manuscripts. (4) From the other manuscripts. (5) Reported by al-Dhahabi in al-‘Uluw, p. 32, who commented: “It is a weak added report (za’idah da‘ifah).” A similar wording appears in Sahih al-Bukhari from Qatada on the authority of Anas from the Prophet ﷺ: “So I asked permission at the door of my Lord’s house, and I was granted permission.” Abu Ahmad al-‘Assal also transmitted it in Kitab al-Ma‘rifah with a strong isnad from Thabit on the authority of Anas; there it reads: “I reach the Gate of Paradise and it opens for me. I come before my Lord ﷺ while He is upon His Kursi (Footstool) or His Bed, and He beckons me as I prostrate.” He then records the hadith. I say: This hadith of Qatada on Anas’s authority is also recorded by al-Bukhari in Kitab al-Tawhid under the chapter “The Saying of Allah the Exalted: ‘Faces, that Day, will be radiant, gazing toward their Lord’ (Quran 75:22–23)”, hadith no. 7440, in Fath al-Bari 13:422; and under the chapter “The Saying of Allah the Exalted: ‘I did not create jinn and mankind except to worship Me’ (Quran 51:56)”, hadith no. 7410, 13:392. Al-Darimi also transmits it in his refutation of Bishr al-Marisi as the hadith of Abu Nudrah on the authority of Ibn Abbas—similar to Thabit on Anas—p. 14. It appears in Ahmad’s Musnad 1:281–282, 295–296. In the narration of ‘Amr ibn Jarir from Abu Hurayrah in al-Bukhari: “… so I proceed until I come under the ‘Arsh (Throne), and I fall prostrate before my Lord …”, Kitab al-Tafsir, chapter “The Offspring with Noah”, hadith no. 4712, 8:395–396. Muslim also includes it in Kitab al-Iman, chapter “The People of Paradise Nearest in Rank Therein”, hadith no. 327, 1:184–185.
