Ithbāt Ṣifat al-ʿUlūIbn Qudama

26- Ṭahir ibn Muhammad al-Maqdisi (1) informed us; Abu al-Hasan Makki ibn Mansur narrated; Abu Bakr al-Jarshi (2) reported; Abu al-ʿAbbas al-Asamm said (3): al-Shafiʿi (4) related; Ibrahim ibn Muhammad transmitted, saying (5): Musa ibn ʿUbaydah reported: Abu al-Azhar Muʿawiyah ibn Ishaq ibn Talhah narrated to me, from ʿUbayd Allah (6) ibn ʿUmayr, that he heard Anas ibn Malik say:

“Gabriel ﷺ came to the Prophet ﷺ carrying a white mirror in which there was a single spot. The Prophet ﷺ asked, ‘What is this?’ He replied, ‘This is Friday. (1) In other manuscripts: Tahir ibn Muhammad ibn Tahir al-Maqdisi. (2) In other manuscripts: Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn al-Hasan al-Jurashi. Al-Jurashi (jīm pronounced j, rāʼ with a, and shīn with i) denotes origin from the tribe of Jursh, a branch of Himyar; some say Jursh is a locality in Yemen, and it is possible that this tribe settled there and took its name. See al-Lubab, vol. 1 p. 272. (3) The word qala (“said”) is absent in other manuscripts. (4) In other manuscripts: al-Shafi‘i Muhammad ibn Idris. (5) In other manuscripts: qala haddathani. (6) In other manuscripts: Abd Allah, which is erroneous. The reading of the original agrees with that in al-Shafi‘i’s Musnad. (7) In manuscript H: mā hādhihi yā Jibrīl (“What is this, O Gabriel?”). (8) In other manuscripts: wa-n-nās (“and the people”). (9) In H and R: wa-mā (“and what”).
