Ithbāt Ṣifat al-ʿUlūIbn Qudama

21- Muhammad narrated to us; Ahmad informed us; Hamad (1) informed us; Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn al-Sindi (2) narrated to us; Ja‘far ibn Muhammad ibn al-Sabbah (3) narrated to us; Yahya ibn Khudam (4) ibn Mansur narrated to us; Muhammad ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Ziyad al-Ansari narrated to us; Malik ibn Dinar, from Anas ibn Malik—may Allah be pleased with him—reported:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Jibril (peace be upon him) has conveyed to me from Allah (5) that Allah the Exalted says: ‘By My might and My majesty—and My oneness (6) and the dependence of My creation upon Me (7), by My being established over My Throne and the loftiness of My station—I am truly ashamed to punish My male servant or My female servant who have grown old while remaining upon Islam, and then I punish them.’”

Anas continued: “I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ weeping at this, so I asked, ‘What causes you to weep?’ He replied, ‘I weep for the one before whom Allah Most High feels shame, yet that person feels no shame before Allah (8).’”

(1) The isnad (chain) up to this point is exactly the same as that of the preceding hadith (narration): Muḥammad is the son of ʿAbd al-Bāqī, and the “Hamad” erroneously found in all manuscripts for “Aḥmad” refers to Aḥmad ibn Aḥmad al-Ḥaddād. This latter Aḥmad is the ḥāfiẓ (hadith master) Abū Naʿīm. (2) In manuscript M there is a break in the isnad between Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Bāqī and Ibn al-Ṣabāḥ, with three of their narrators omitted. (3) In M it reads “Muḥammad ibn al-Ṣabāḥ.” (4) In R and H it reads “harām,” in M “hizām,” and in the original text “hudām” with both hāʾ and dāl unvowelled. The correct reading is that adopted here, which agrees with al-Ḥilya. See his biography in al-Mīzān 4/372. In al-Taḥdhīb (11/203) it appears as “Khadām” with an unvowelled dāl; in al-Taqrīb it is “Yahya ibn Khudām,” with a kasra under the khāʾ. The commentator notes that the vowel omission in the Taḥdhīb copy is a scribal error. See al-Taqrīb 2/346. (5) The text in parentheses does not appear in the other manuscripts. (6) It is absent from the other manuscripts. (7) It is not present in H and R. (8) Abū Naʿīm transmits this hadith in al-Ḥilya 2/387, stating: “It was narrated from Mālik only by Abū Salama al-Anṣārī, whom Yahya ibn Khudām repudiates.” Al-Dhahabī includes it in al-ʿUluw (p. 43), remarking: “It is classified among the mawḍūʿāt (fabrications), and this al-Anṣārī is not reliable.” He also records it in al-Mīzān 3/600. I note that Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ziyād al-Anṣārī is described by al-ʿAqīlī as “very munkar al-hadith” (one who denies hadiths), by Ibn Ṭāhir as “such, and he has ṭamāt (serious defects),” and by Malik ibn Dīnār simply as “munkar al-hadith.” See al-Mīzān 3/598 and al-Ḍuʿafāʾ al-Kabīr of al-ʿAqīlī 4/96. Al-Dhahabī enumerates the defects mentioned by Ibn Ṭāhir, including those affecting this hadith (see al-Mīzān 3/598–600). Burhān al-Dīn al-Ḥalabī also cites it in Kashf al-Ḥathīth ʿan Rūmī bi-waḍʿi al-ḥadīth (p. 382), quoting Ibn Ṭāhir: “a liar with ṭamāt.” He explains that “and he has ṭamāt” is a euphemism for mawḍūʿāt, implying that the narrator fabricates, since he is a liar.
