18 – Abu al-Fath ibn al-Bati (1) narrated to us; Abu al-Fadl ibn Khayrun informed us; Abu ʿAli ibn Shadhan informed us; Abu Sahl ibn Ziyad transmitted; the judge Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Barti (2) transmitted; al-Qaʿnabi transmitted; al-Mughīrah ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Qurashi, from Abu al-Zinād, from al-Aʿraj, from Abu Hurayrah, reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“When Allah completed the creation, He wrote in His Book, which is with Him above the Throne: ‘My mercy has outstripped My wrath.’” (3)
In another wording from Abu Hurayrah—(I heard) (4) the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: “Allah wrote a writing before He brought the creation into being: ‘My mercy has outstripped My wrath,’ and it is with Him above the Throne.” It was recorded by al-Bukhari (and by Muslim) (5).
(1) In the other manuscripts: “Abu al-Fath Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Baqi.”
(2) In the original manuscript it reads “al-Barqi,” while in manuscripts H and R it appears as “al-Barami” without any personal name; both are erroneous. The correct reading is the one we have adopted from manuscript M. The same appears in his biographical entry; see Tadhkirat al-Huffaz, vol. 2, p. 596.
(3) This wording is found only in the original manuscript and in no other copy of the work.
(4) The word “qal” (he said) appears in the original; the emendation is drawn from the other manuscripts.
(5) “wa Muslim” does not appear in the original.
