Ithbāt Ṣifat al-ʿUlūIbn Qudama
  1. The jurisconsult Imām Najm al-Dīn Abū al-ʿAbbās Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Khalaf wrote to me, saying: “I saw the Prophet ﷺ in a dream. I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I wish to ask you about an issue.’ He replied, ‘What is it?’ I said, ‘The Quran and the sound hadiths state that Allah is in the heaven, yet most people reject this.’ He responded, ‘And who would deny such a matter?! Indeed, Allah is in the heaven.’ (1)
(1) This report is not found in the original sources. We thus observe that these hadiths and the preceding Qur’anic verses unmistakably affirm Allah’s elevation (uluww) in His Essence, indicating that His elevation pertains solely to His Self. Yet despite the clarity of the evidence, the innovators denied Allah’s elevation in His Essence and imposed their diseased reason on the texts of revelation. They argued that if Allah truly possessed elevation in His Essence, He would resemble the creatures—since that would require Him to be in a place, and place entails spatial limitation and corporeality, qualities exclusive to created beings, for whatever is encompassed by a place must itself be a created, corporeal entity. However, this inference does not bind the people of truth. As Ibn al-Qayyim states: “There is no coherence in this assertion, for the Almighty declares, ‘There is nothing like Him’ (Qur’an 42:11). He is not comparable to any of His creation, cannot be apprehended by measurement, nor be likened to mankind. He existed before places and will exist after them. There is no god but Him, Creator of all things without partner. All Muslims and every rational person agree that whatever exists must occupy a place, and that which occupies no place is non-existence. Reason and proof establish that He was, in eternal preexistence, not in any place, yet not non-existent. How then can He be compared to any of His creatures, or be subjected to analogy or representation? Exalted is He above what the unjust assert—supremely exalted.”
