Ithbāt Ṣifat al-ʿUlūIbn Qudama

the Quraysh looked at him and said, “He has abandoned his faith,” and they dispersed from him (1).

  1. Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd Allāh ibn Manṣūr ibn Hibat Allāh al-Mawṣilī informed us; Abū al-Ḥusayn al-Mubārak ibn ʿAbd al-Jabbār al-Ṣayrafī narrated to us; Abū al-Ḥasan Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Jaʿfar narrated; Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn (Ibrāhīm) (2) ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Shādhān narrated; Abū ʿAbd Allāh Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Mughallis narrated; Abū ʿUthmān Saʿīd ibn Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd al-Umawī related, saying: My father told me—he said that Ibn Isḥāq said (3):

A black slave belonging to some of the people of Khaybar went out with their flock of sheep until he came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He asked a few of the Prophet’s Companions, “Who is this man?” They replied, “The Messenger of Allah who has been sent from Allah.” He asked, “The One who is in heaven?” They said, “Yes.” He said, “Bring me close to him.” So they led him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

He said, “Are you the Messenger of Allah?” The Prophet replied, “Yes.” He asked, “[Sent by] the One who is in heaven?” He answered, “Yes.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then instructed him to recite the testimony of faith, and he did so.

Next, he turned toward his sheep, picked up some pebbles, and threw them in their faces, saying, “Go!”

(1) It is reported by Ibn Khuzayma in Kitāb al-Tawḥīd, p. 120; by al-Bayhaqī in Al-Asmāʾ wa-l-Ṣifāt, p. 534; and by al-Dhahabī in Al-ʿUlū, p. 24, who remarks that the narrator “ʿImrān” is weak. I am astonished by the transparent fallacy advanced by al-Kawtharī in his marginal note on this hadith (al-Bayhaqī, Al-Asmāʾ wa-l-Ṣifāt, p. 534), where he claims that, if one regards this report as the Prophet’s ﷺ affirmation to al-Ḥusayn that God is in the heaven, one must also admit that the Prophet affirmed God’s presence in the six directions on earth. This reasoning is manifestly unsound and needs no elaborate refutation, for in his dialogue with al-Ḥusayn the Prophet ﷺ required him only to believe in God alone—asserting that the other deities he once worshipped neither benefit nor harm him—whereas true benefit and harm come solely from God, Who is affirmed as Being in the heaven, alone without partner. It is unsurprising that al-Kawtharī, like other deniers of divine attributes, resorts to distortion and groundless speculation when faced with clear evidence. (2) The term “Ibrāhīm” does not appear in other manuscripts. (3) In other manuscripts: “Thana Ibn Isḥāq.”
