Ithbāt Ṣifat al-ʿUlūIbn Qudama

96 – Abu al-Mutahhar al-Qasim ibn al-Fadl ibn ʿAbd al-Wahid al-Saydalani narrated (he said) (1): Ahmad ibn ʿAli ibn Khalaf narrated to us; al-Hakim Abu ʿAbd Allah the ḥāfiẓ narrated to us; he said: I heard Muhammad ibn Salih ibn Haniʾ say: I heard Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Ishaq ibn Khuzaymah—may Allah have mercy on him—say: “Whoever does not acknowledge that Allah is upon His Throne, having risen above His seven heavens, is a disbeliever in Him. He is to be summoned to repent; if he repents, all is well, otherwise his neck is to be struck and he is to be thrown onto one of the refuse heaps so that neither the Muslims nor the protected non-Muslim citizens are offended by the stench of his corpse. His wealth becomes fayʾ (public booty); no Muslim may inherit from him, for a Muslim does not inherit from a disbeliever, as the Prophet ﷺ said.” (2)

97 – Abu ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-Barr cited the narration recorded by Malik in the Muwaṭṭaʾ (from) (3) Ibn Shihab, from Abu Salamah ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman and Abu ʿAbd Allah al-Agharr, both of them from Abu Hurayrah (4), that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Our Lord—blessed and exalted—descends to the…"

It was recorded by Imam Abu 'Uthman as-Sabuni in 'Aqidat al-Salaf Ashab al-Hadith' (Majmu‘at al-Rasa’il al-Muniriyya 1:111), where he attributes it to al-Hakim in al-Tarikh and in his Ma‘rifat ‘Ulum al-Hadith (p.84). In Ibn Khuzayma’s Kitab at-Tawhid (p.101) it reads: “We believe the report of Allah, Exalted is He, that our Creator istawa (is established) on His Throne. We do not alter Allah’s words, nor utter anything other than what has been said to us—unlike the Jahmiyya (the negators) who claimed that He istawla (seized) His Throne rather than istawa, thus changing what was conveyed to them, just as the Jews, when ordered to say ‘hatta’ (pardon), said ‘hinta’ (snub), opposing Allah’s command; similarly the Jahmiyya.” Dr. Muhammad Khalil Harras comments: “Hence the lam in ‘Jahmiyya’ was likened to the Jews’ substitution.” (3) In manuscripts (H) and (R) it reads “wa ‘an” (“and from”).
