94 – (1) Abū al-Fath Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Bāqī ibn Aḥmad ibn Sulaymān (2) informed us. He said (3): Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn Zakariyyā al-Ṭuraythīthī informed us. He said (4): Abū al-Qāsim Hibat Allāh ibn al-Ḥasan informed us; Muḥammad ibn al-Muẓaffar, the Qur’an-reciter, narrated to us; al-Ḥasan ibn Muḥammad ibn Hubaysh (5), the Qur’an-reciter, narrated to us; Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Ḥātim—(he said: I asked my father and Abū Zurʿah) (6)…
I also read this to Abū al-Faḍl ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Qāhir al-Ṭūsī in Mosul, and he informed you (7): Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn al-ʿAllāf reported. He said (8): Abū al-Qāsim ibn Bishrān informed us. He said: Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Mardak (9) informed us. He said (10): Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Ḥātim said: I asked my father and Abū Zurʿah about the doctrinal positions of Ahl al-Sunnah regarding the fundamentals of the faith, about what they had witnessed the scholars upholding throughout all the lands, and about what the two of them themselves believed in that regard. They said: We encountered the scholars (in every land) (11)
(1) In the other manuscripts: “Sheikh Abu al-Fath informed us …”
(2) In the original and in manuscript (r) it reads as in the text; in manuscripts (h) and (m) it reads “Salman.” The reading in the original agrees with al-ʿIbar (vol. 3, p. 44) and Ash-Shadharat (vol. 4, p. 213). The variant in the two other copies matches al-Dhahabi’s entry in Siyar Aʿlam al-Nubalaʾ (vol. 20, p. 481). In al-Bidaya wa’l-Nihaya the lineage is misattributed as “Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Wāḥid ibn Sulayman” (see vol. 12, p. 260). We have restored the original reading throughout, owing to disagreement among its translators over the name of his second grandfather.
(3) The word “qāla” (he said) occurs only in the original manuscript.
(4) The word “qāla” (he said) occurs only in the original manuscript.
(5) In manuscripts (h) and (r) it reads “Hunaysh,” whereas in al-Lalkāʾī it appears as “Ḥabbash.”
(6) The words enclosed in parentheses do not appear in the other manuscripts.
(7) In manuscript (h) it reads: “qāla akhbirukum” (“he said, ‘I inform you’”).
(8) The word “qāla” (he said) occurs only in the original manuscript.
(9) This reading appears in all copies; the correct form is probably “Mudrik,” but no biography of him has been found.
(10) The word “qāla” (he said) occurs only in the original manuscript.
(11) Not found in the original manuscript.
