and to listen and obey those in authority so long as they establish the prayer; the governors are not to be opposed by the sword; the Caliphate belongs to Quraysh; a small amount of whatever intoxicates in large amounts is regarded as khamr (intoxicating wine); mutʿa (temporary marriage) is forbidden; and I counsel you to fear Allah, to hold fast to the Sunnah, and to the transmitted reports from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.
Ibn ‘Umar and all those who took part in the Pledge of al-Ridwān—which the Qur’an explicitly refers to in the verse of Sūrah al-Fath (48)—and, by extension, the entire body of Muhājirīn and Anṣār, such as Khalid ibn al-Walīd, al-‘Abbās, ‘Abd Allāh ibn ‘Amr, this ring (haliba), and, indeed, anyone who accompanied the Messenger of Allāh (peace be upon him), fought alongside him, performed Ḥajj with him, or heard directly from him. As for what the Rāfiḍah (Rejectionists) and the people of bid‘ah (innovations) have transmitted in their books, pay it no mind: there is neither a miracle nor any true nobility in it, for most of it is false, a lie, and a fabrication. The Rāfiḍah are notorious for narrating spurious reports or for rejecting what the Ṣaḥīḥ collections and the Musnads contain… A sensible person is his own critic, and from the excellence of one’s faith is refraining from that which does not concern him.
—Al-Dhahabī, Siyar A‘lam al-Nubalaʾ, vol. 10, pp. 92–94.
The Rāfiḍah are the bearers of the standard of cursing the Companions of the Messenger of Allāh, for they have fabricated unjust calumnies against Abū Bakr, ‘Umar, ‘Uthmān, and others among the Companions of the Messenger of Allāh (peace be upon him). Their position led them to declare all of them unbelievers except for a few dozen men, namely: Salman al-Fārisī; Abū Dharr; al-Miqdād ibn al-Aswad; ‘Ammār ibn Yasir; Ḥudhayfah ibn al-Yamān; Abū al-Haytham ibn at-Tihhān; Sahl ibn Ḥunayf; ‘Ubādah ibn al-Ṣāmit; Abū Ayyūb al-Anṣārī; Khuzaymah ibn Thābit; Abū Sa‘īd al-Khudrī; and a few others. Indeed, Shi‘i hostility concedes that the group of “righteous” Companions is even smaller than this list.

It is hardly surprising that these pretenders should espouse such views about the Companions of the Messenger of Allāh (peace be upon him), for they came only to undermine Islam. They therefore began by attacking its carriers and messengers, who are our link to the Prophet of guidance. To disparage them is to disparage Islam itself. Thus their pickaxes have been at work since the rise of their founder and leader—Abd Allāh ibn Sabā’, the Jew—whose heart was consumed by hatred and envy of the religion. Yet they and their ilk, and this great faith and its noble heralds—the Companions of the Master of mankind and those eminent imams who followed their path—are like a rock that, though struck again and again, does not yield, but wears down the horn of the wild goat.
O Allāh, whoever harbors ill will toward this religion, turn his plotting back upon his own neck, and make its destruction the fruit of his own designs. Protect us, O Allāh, from error; grant us love for the Companions of Your Prophet and love for those who loved them; and recompense those who bore them animosity with the wickedness of their deeds, the ugliness of their creeds, and the baseness of their intentions.
