The Sunnah is conforming to the command of Allah and the command of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), holding a middle way between excess and negligence. As Imam al-Hāwī explains this creed: “We love the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him); we do not go to extremes in loving any of them, nor do we disavow any; we hate those who hate them; we mention them only with goodness, and we speak of them only well. Loving them is religion, faith, and ihsan (excellence), and hating them is disbelief, hypocrisy, and transgression.” (at-Tahawiyya with commentary, p. 466). At the core of this creed is abstaining from disputes among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and from the disagreements that arose between them, while believing that each acted as a mujtahid (independent jurist) in what differed between them—each rewarded for his endeavor. Consider the case of ʿAli and Muʿawiya, whose conflict led to armed fighting. The Ahl al-Sunnah hold that ʿAli (may Allah be pleased with him) was a mujtahid who was correct, so he is rewarded for both his effort and his correctness. Muʿawiya was also a mujtahid who erred; he is rewarded for his effort and his mistake is forgiven. Loving them both is a duty we owe to Allah, for in this lies success and salvation. As Imam Abu ʿUthman al-Sabuni states in ʿAqida al-Salaf wa Ahl al-Hadith (p. 129): “Whoever loves them, follows them, prays for them, upholds their rights, and recognizes their virtues will prevail with the victors; but whoever hates them and attributes to them what the Rāfiḍa and Khawārij attribute to them—may Allah curse them—will perish with the perishing.” Imam al-Dhahabi clarifies how we should treat the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) and the events that took place among them: “It is settled that we must refrain from much of what transpired and from fighting among all the Companions. These accounts still appear in chronicles, books, and volumes, but most are disconnected, weak, and some outright fabrications. These matters lie between us and our scholars, and they should be set aside, concealed, even eradicated, so that hearts may be purified, love for the Companions may flourish, and we may be content with them. Concealing such reports is obligatory for the general public and for individual scholars alike, though a fair-minded scholar, free from bias, may be permitted to study them in private—provided he seeks forgiveness for the Companions—as Allah teaches: ‘And those who came after them say, “Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith, and let not our hearts harbor ill will toward those who believed. Our Lord, indeed You are Kind and Merciful.”’ (Qurʾān 59:10). These men had merits and deeds that atoned for whatever occurred among them; their jihad erased past errors, and their worship purified. We do not exaggerate regarding any of them, nor do we claim their infallibility; yet we affirm that some are superior to others. We assert with certainty that Abu Bakr and ʿUmar are the best of the ummah, followed by the remaining eight of those promised Paradise, then Ḥamza, Jaʿfar, Muʿadh, Zayd, the Mothers of the Believers, the daughters of the Prophet (peace be upon him), and the People of Badr—each in their rank—and thereafter figures such as Abu al-Darda and Salman al-Farsi…
