openly, and they will hear His speech; that He is above the Throne (1); that the divine decree, both its good and its evil, is from Allah—nothing occurs except what Allah (2) wills, ordains, and predestines; that the best of people after the Messenger of Allah ﷺ are Abu Bakr, then ʿUmar, then ʿUthman, and then ʿAli (3) ibn Abi Talib—may Allah be pleased with them (4) all. I pledge my allegiance to them and seek forgiveness for them, for the factions of the Battles of the Camel and Ṣiffīn, both the slayers and the slain, and for all the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ (5) without exception.

(5) This counsel, though not soundly transmitted with an isnād from Imam al-Shāfiʿī (may Allāh be pleased with him), nevertheless embodies the core tenets of Ahl al-Sunnah wa-l-Jamāʿah and reflects the exemplary model provided by the Prophet’s Companions, whom every Muslim should emulate. They followed the middle path, steering clear of both excess and negligence, whereas some self-proclaimed Muslims have slandered the Companions and disparaged their rank, earning the label zandaqa (heresy) and enmity to Islam; for to denigrate the Companions is to denigrate the entire religion, since Islam reached us through them as our link to the Messenger ﷺ—they strove in Allāh’s cause with utmost devotion and conveyed His message as He willed, and thus enjoy an unparalleled status. The Messenger ﷺ warned: “Do not revile my Companions, do not revile my Companions; by Him in whose hand is my soul, if any one of you were to spend like Mount Uhud in gold, it would not equal a mudd of one of them” (Muslim, al-Fadāʾil). Allāh further commends them in Qurʾān 59:8–10:
“For the poor emigrants who were expelled from their homes and their properties, seeking bounty from Allāh and His pleasure, and aiding Allāh and His Messenger—those are the truthful. And those who were settled in the home and [embraced] faith before them—those who love those who emigrated to them and find no want in their breasts for what they were given, and they give them preference over themselves, even though they are in need; and whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul, they are the successful. And [there is a share] for those who came after them, saying, ‘Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith, and put not in our hearts resentment toward those who have believed. Our Lord, You are Kind and Merciful.’”
These verses delineate three categories whose loyalty exemplifies true faith; anyone deviating from this path merits nothing but humiliation and ruin. The hadiths on the virtues of the Prophet’s Companions are too numerous to count, and thus their esteem is a cornerstone of the creed of Ahl al-Sunnah wa-l-Jamāʿah.
