86- He said: I asked Sulaymān ibn Ḥarb, “What did Ḥammād ibn Zayd use to say about the Jahmiyyah?” He replied, “He used to say: All that they want is to claim that there is nothing in heaven.” (1)
87- ʿAbd Allāh informed us; Aḥmad informed us; Hibat Allāh informed us (2). He also reported that Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn Yaʿqūb informed us; Dalaj ibn Aḥmad reported; Aḥmad ibn ʿAlī al-Abbār narrated to us (3); Muḥammad ibn Manṣūr al-Ṭūsī narrated to us; Nūḥ ibn Maymūn narrated to us; Bakīr ibn Maʿrūf narrated to us, from Muqātil ibn Ḥayyān, on the Almighty’s words, “There is no private conversation of three but that He is the fourth of them” (Qur’an 58:7). He said, “He is upon the Throne, and nothing is ever outside His knowledge.” (4)
88- It is related from Jaʿfar ibn ʿAbd Allāh (that he) (5) said: A man came to Mālik ibn Anas and asked, “O Abū ʿAbd Allāh, ‘The All-Merciful rose over the Throne’—how did He rise?” (6) I have never seen Mālik react to anything as he reacted to that question; perspiration broke out on him—meaning sweat—and everyone present lowered their gaze, waiting to see what he would say. When Mālik regained his composure, he said, “The ‘how’ is beyond comprehension, the rising (istiwāʾ) is not unknown, and believing in it”}
