(1) Al-Tamhīd, vol. 7, pp. 139, 142; al-Dhahabī, Al-Ulūw, p. 99—where he attributes it to Abū Aḥmad al-ʿAssāl, Abū ʿAbd Allāh Ibn Baṭṭa, and Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr, describing their isnāds as “good” and regarding Muqātil as a trustworthy imam. Also transmitted by ʿAbd Allāh b. Aḥmad in Kitāb al-Sunnah (no. 592, 1/304; ed. Muḥammad b. Saʿīd al-Qaḥṭānī), by al-Lalkāʾī in Sharḥ Usūl Iʿtiqād Ahl al-Sunnah (no. 670, 2/400), by al-Ṭabarī in his Tafsīr (28/12), and by al-Ājurrī in al-Sharīʿah, p. 289. (2) In the H and R manuscripts it reads “Abū Bakr ibn al-Nuqūr”; in M, “Ibn al-Qayyim.” This refers to Abū Bakr ibn al-Nuqūr, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn Abī al-Ḥusayn, mentioned above. (3) Transmitted by al-Lalkāʾī from ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥasan al-Ṭabarī in Sharḥ Usūl Iʿtiqād Ahl al-Sunnah (no. 665, 2/398n), by al-Bayhaqī in al-Asmāʾ wa al-Ṣifāt (p. 516) with slight verbal variants, and by al-Dhahabī in Al-Ulūw (p. 98). Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah—after citing a statement similar to Mālik’s that will be quoted later—adds: “Such an answer is authentically reported from Rabīʿa, Shaykh of Mālik” (al-Fatāwā, 5/365). He also remarks in Al-Hamāwiyya (p. 24): “Al-Khallāl related—through chains composed solely of trustworthy imams—from Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah: He said, Rabīʿa b. Abī ʿAbd al-Raḥmān was asked concerning the verse: ‘Ar-Raḥmān ‘alā al-ʿarsh istawā’ (The Beneficent established Himself above the Throne),” and he records the remainder of the report.
