ʿIsa al-ʿAttar narrated to us; Ishaq ibn Bishr narrated to us; from Abu Bakr al-Hudhali (1), from al-Hasan, who said: “Of all created beings, nothing is closer to your Lord than Israfil (3). Between him and his Lord lie seven veils (5), each one the span of a five-hundred-year journey. Israfil is below these, his head underneath the Throne, and his feet planted in the lowest depths of the earth (6).”
71 – Muhammad informed us; Hamad informed us; Ahmad ibn ʿAbd Allah (8) informed us; Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Fadl narrated to us; Abu al-ʿAbbas al-Sarraj narrated to us; ʿAbd Allah ibn Abi al-Zinad (11) and Harun said: Siyyar narrated to us; Jaʿfar narrated to us, who said: I heard Malik ibn Dinar say, “When the truthful—al-siddiqun—hear the Quran recited, their hearts are stirred with longing for the Hereafter.” Then he would say, “Take it,” and he would begin to recite, declaring: “Listen to the words of the Truthful One from above His Throne (12).”
(1) In manuscript H: “al-Hazli,” which is erroneous.
(2) The phrase “min al-khalq” (“from the creation”) does not appear in the other manuscripts.
(3) In manuscripts H and R: “min Israfil ilayhi” (“from Israfil to him”).
(4) In the other manuscripts: “wa baynahu wa baynahu” (“and between him and him”).
(5) In H: “sab‘a hijab” (“seven veils”); in M: “tis‘ hijab” (“nine veils”).
(6) Ibn al-Qayyim includes this report in Ijtima‘ al-Juyush al-Islamiyya, p. 74; al-Dhahabi cites it in al-‘Uluww, p. 93, remarking that its narrator Abu Bakr is weak. Abu Bakr is identified either as Salma (with the second m emphatic) b. ‘Abd Allah or as Ruh—see al-Taqrib 2:401. The chain attributes the hadith to Ishaq b. Bishr, who, as noted above (see note 28), is accused of lying. The report is therefore very weak.
(7) In H and R: “anba’a” (“he informed”); in M: “anba’na” (“we were informed”).
(8) In M: the name “Ahmad” appears alone; in H and R this name is omitted.
(9) In H: “anba’a.”
(10) In H: “anba’a.”
(11) In M: “ibn Abu Ziyad”; in R: “ibn Abu Zinad”; in H: “bn al-Zinad” (omitting “Abu”).
(12) Abu Nu‘aym records the hadith in al-Hilya 2:358; Ibn al-Qayyim in Ijtima‘ al-Juyush al-Islamiyya p. 75; al-Dhahabi in al-‘Uluww p. 97, describing its chain as sound. Shaykh al-Albani observes that in al-Hilya it appears via two routes from Sayyar, who narrated from Ja‘far: “I heard Malik b. Dinar report it.” Sayyar’s link to Ja‘far is through Ibn Sulayman al-Dab‘i (Ibn Hatim al-‘Anazi Abu Salama al-Basri), whom al-Hafiz in al-Taqrib characterizes as “trustworthy but prone to errors.” Al-Albani also includes the hadith in al-Mizan 2:253, deeming it sound. See further al-Albani’s Mukhtasar al-‘Uluww p. 131; al-Taqrib 1:343; al-Mizan 2:253.
