As for alteration, consider the report related by Abu Dawud from ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar, who said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) "forbade breaking the Muslims’ lawful coinage that circulates among them, except when it is defective."⦗1⦘ Accordingly, if the silver or gold coins in use are found to be flawed, they are to be broken.
A similar ruling applies to modifying three-dimensional images that are not already being trampled. Abu Hurayrah narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"Gabriel came to me and said, ‘I came to you last night, but what kept me from entering the house was that inside there was a statue of a man.’"
In the house there was also a curtain with images on it and a dog. The Prophet therefore commanded that the head of the statue be cut off so that it resembled a tree, that the curtain be cut up and turned into two cushions thrown on the floor to be walked upon, and that the dog be put outside. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) carried this out, and it turned out that the dog was a puppy belonging to al-Hasan and al-Husayn that had been under their raised cot. This report was narrated by Imam Ahmad, Abu Dawud, and al-Tirmidhi, who declared it authentic.⦗2⦘
