In Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim it is reported from Abū Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, passed by a heap of food. He put his hand into it and his fingers felt dampness. He said, “What is this, owner of the food?” The man replied, “It was rained on, O Messenger of Allah.” He said, “Why did you not place it on top of the food so the people could see it? Whoever cheats us is not one of me.” 1
Another wording states: “Whoever cheats me is not one of me.”
Thus the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, declared that a cheat does not fall under the unrestricted title of ‘the people of religion and faith,’ just as he said: “The fornicator does not commit fornication while he is a believer; the thief does not steal while he is a believer; and the wine-drinker does not drink wine while he is a believer.” 2
Such a person is stripped of the true reality of faith by which one deserves reward and deliverance from punishment, even though the basic root of faith that distinguishes him from the disbelievers and ultimately frees him from Hellfire remains with him.
Cheating enters sales when defects are concealed and goods are misrepresented—when the outward appearance of the merchandise is better than its hidden reality, like the case the Prophet witnessed and condemned. It also infiltrates the crafts: those who prepare foods—bread, cooked dishes, lentils, roasted meats and the like—or those who manufacture garments such as weavers and tailors, or any other artisan. All of them must be restrained from cheating, betrayal, and concealment.
Among these are the “alchemists” who adulterate currency, jewels, perfume, and other items. They attempt to manufacture gold, silver, ambergris, musk, precious stones, saffron, rose-water, and the like, seeking to imitate Allah’s creation. Yet Allah has not created anything that His servants are able to create in the same manner. Rather, Allah—Most High—has said, as His Messenger related: “Who is more unjust than one who sets out to create as I create? Let them create a speck! Let them create a gnat!” 1
