‘Come, let us go to our brothers from among the Helpers and bring them into this affair with us.’

The Helpers replied, ‘A leader from us and a leader from you.’

ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab said, ‘Who can claim three distinctions like these: “the second of the two when they were in the cave, when he said to his companion, ‘Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us’” (Q 9:40)? Who were those two?’ He then stretched out his hand and pledged allegiance to him, and the people followed, giving him a sound and wholehearted pledge.
