305 – (Weak)
ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
“A man once came to the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—and asked him for something. The Prophet said, ‘I have nothing with me at the moment, but buy on my credit; when something reaches me I will repay it.’
ʿUmar responded, ‘O Messenger of Allah, you have already given away—Allah has not charged you with what you cannot afford.’ The Prophet disliked ʿUmar’s remark.
Then a man from the Anṣār said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, spend, and do not fear poverty from the Lord of the Throne.’ The Messenger of Allah smiled, and the joy showed on his face at the Anṣārī’s words. He then said, ‘This is what I have been commanded to do.’”
