283 – Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad, reporting from his father, said:

ʿĀʾishah was asked, “What was the Messenger of Allah’s bedding in your house?” She replied, “A piece of tanned leather, stuffed with palm fiber.”

Hafsah was asked the same question: “What was the Messenger of Allah’s bedding in your house?” She answered, “A coarse woolen blanket that we would fold in two layers for him to sleep on. One night I said, ‘If you fold it into four layers it will be softer for him.’ So we folded it into four. When morning came he asked, ‘What bedding did you lay out for me last night?’ We said, ‘It is the same blanket, except that we folded it into four layers because we thought it would be more comfortable for you.’ He replied, ‘Put it back as it was, for its softness prevented me from performing my night prayer.’”
